Update: Week Ending December 23

Wizard of OZ:
Chris visited the shop to review the stuff built so far and to discuss the munchkin land drop with Hector.
  • The house only needs to drop 6", and not all the way to the floor
  • Need to pull 2-step stair unit for house; door NOT at floor level.
  • Chris will update the munchkin land drop to remove the bush in the dead center
  • Discussed painting the "fountain" back to its former gray with purple shadows for Munchkinland.
  • Fences are perfect
  • Discussed touching up stumps to match hobbit trees
  • Discussed pulling Charley Brown rocks and touching up
Madeline's Christmas
  • Show closes December 29th.
  • Chris J will get hampers to store legs and borders
  • Everything to store onsite in the Balcony SR loft.
  • Archival photo shoot of both casts completed.

Martha Mitchell Calling
  • Show closes December 23rd.
  • Deuce and two overhires will strike the set and pack it for shipping
  • Mirror to be wrapped and placed in secure location until the auction

Altar Boyz

  • Chris was out at actor housing repairing closet doors, the laundry room, and make sure all lights were working
    • Also made sure computer was hooked up to the internet
    • Also tested to see if a WiFi hub in the dining room would reach every room in the house. (yes)
  • Chris brought back a bag of laundry and left it by the laundry room for wash, fold, and return to casthouse
  • Gaby will go out on Sunday to return this laundry, and to do final clean up and prep for actors

Ananda is out of town until the 30th.

Production Meeting: Dec 13

Earl was not able to make it due to a conflicting change in his schedule
Tony had a task to perform that pre-empted the meeting.

ALTAR BOYZ
  • Platforms are done, steel arches delivered today for assemble.
  • Looked at the LCD screen and PowerPoint for the Soul Sensor display; Dave was initially asking for a larger monitor until he realized that we wanted to use an LCD and not a CRT unit. We are going to slap together a mock-up so he can look at it on Monday.
  • We will be ordering a new set of gel-strings: we have them budgeted under capital costs.
  • Put in check request so Ellis can start shopping costumes.
  • The new mics have shipped from Sweetwater.

Wizard of Oz
  • Gene reports that they've figured out an effective way to accomplish the Collapsing House effect
  • Earl agreed to place Munchkin- land downstage of the ground row to accommodate artwork.
  • The Munchkin Land groundrow is cut.
  • Discussed Scarecrow wagon with Gene; discussed options for "washtub" base for the pole.
  • plan & section given to Patrick; I will email a revised set to reflect the drop relocation.
  • Need drawing of throne unit
  • Need drawing of yellow brick road (accurate to stage)
  • Need color elevations for all - will have for Monday
  • Earl will shop fabric for green curtain.
Martha Mitchell Calling
  • The show continues to get a good reception: the school matinĂ©e was very well received
  • the NEW TIMES review is out, and we agreed it's a good review event though the first paragraph is a little scary.
  • Photo call is set for next Thursday
  • There are several post-show meet & greets on the schedule: Carl warns that Annette needs about 15 minutes to get out of costumes and makeup, and that Gordon may not be able to make it due to family commitments.

Madeline's Christmas
  • Need to order Batteries (will last into Altar Boyz)
FOOTLOOSE
  • Dave will be holding call backs on Monday
  • Sean McClelland was in earlier to meet with Dave about his basic set concept
  • Re: above, Gene will investigate the possibility of putting the 20' turntable on a slipstage: no guarantee that this is on our budget, but he will research it.
  • Dave is setting a follow-up meeting with Sean for this Wednesday; Babs, Ellis, Patrick and Chris will probably sit in.
REMINDER: STAFF PARTY IS THIS MONDAY AT 5PM
if you haven't already done so, please RSVP to Gillian at reception. infoATactorsplayhouseDOTorg. Food and drink, and the Evil Gift Exchange Exchange Exchange.

Oz reference photos: Kansas Countryside

We already have a drop for Kansas; but just in case there is any question of its suitability, I've lined up some pictures of the actual Kansas so I can show that the drop we're using is very, very similar.

Oz reference photos: split rail fence

For the fence bordering the cornfield in both Kansas and Oz, I want an old style split-rail fence that uses crossed posts instead of the upright posts we see in common use now.

My reasons are purely practical: the crossed posts will give a wider footprint and make the fence more stable as a free standing unit.

This is more or less the effect I'm trying to achieve. For our purposes, we only need the top and middle rail.

This one isn't bad: it's a little taller than I want, but it shows how the top and bottom rail relate to the crossed posts.

2007/12/07

Jr. Orange Bowl Parade

The parade is on December 29th. The parade route (Alhambra Circle, Ponce De Leon, and Miracle Mile, will be closed to traffic at 5:15. THIS MEANS YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO DRIVE ACROSS THEM.

LeJeune road closes at Miracle Mile at 6:oo pm.

2007/12/06

OZ research

This image shows the thematic use of color: munchkins are all blue toned, the lands of trial are red, and of course, the emerald city is green.

Interesting concepts for OZ at this website: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/stumarsh/WIZOZ.htm
this isn't the way we're going, but I thought it was an interesting approach worth admiring.

Production Meeting: Dec 6, 2007

Adminstrative

A reminder that there is a staff Holiday party on December 17 at 5pm: we hope you all will be able to attend.

David will be out of town until Tuesday evening, holding auditions in NYC.

A reminder that Friday is Gallery Night: parking will be in short supply

I will be leading the talkback on Friday evening.

WIZARD OF OZ

Earl and I have met and worked out the show: we'll be able to pull a lot of it from stock. . I am preparing a list of scenic items to pull, and I am already drawing stuff for the shop. Shop will start getting drawings this afternoon.

We will need to get an accurate count of ADC 170 track

We will need to order a muslin drop from Hansen. We should have it down on the paint floor no later than Jan 2.

We discussed constructing a green curtain for Oz; it will be 10' wide by 13' 5" tall. We need to get fabric and webbing to Ellis, and the costume shop will construct.

ALTAR BOYZ

Gene had some renderings of the set.

David asked Patrick to get a quote on rentals for the project: we have a budget of $5000 for this purpose.

I need to call Steve at Stagecraft: he thought he had access to an LED countdown display. Plan B is to set up a computer and LCD display and run a PowerPoint slide show.
UPDATE: Steve says it's a 2 digit display that only counts up or down: no jumping

Madeline's Christmas

Show is fine, but only half the Tivoli on the House Right Aisle is working; one strip is out. Check connections.

When this show comes down, Earl wants to save it again. There is a chance to perform it in Broward next year. We should acquire some large hampers to store the legs and borders. The legs and borders should be clearly labeled. The legs will require proper sewing at some point: we just pinned and taped them for this production.

A window was knocked out of the rear of the main stage; I've called two glass companies to come out and give us an estimate.

MARTHA MITCHELL CALLING

The mirror we didn't use is to be stored in a secure location: Barbara has gotten it donated to our auction.

Kelly Craig gave us a big plug on her show this morning.

Next Wednesday's matinee is in the MORNING. There is some confusion about the starting dates between it and Madeline's Christmas. Earl and I will check it out with Allene.
UPDATE: Martha Mitchell was added later, so it will start at 10:30, not 10 am as indicated on the schedule.

Other Issues

Ellis asked about turning the rolling stairs around for better access to the costume loft. This was supposed to happen during Madeline's load in but didn't what with two shows and the inspection.
UPDATE: Carl has correct the ladder.

Also discussed need to clear out trash from backstage. Simple garbage must be placed in the trash can or a trash bag by the back door; Ociel will not pick up garbage left on the stage deck.

We have provisionally passed our fire safety inspection; we still need to finalize the sprinkler re-certification (backflow valves are all that's left), and we need to clear up the power supply for the servers located in Operations.

Palm Beach Post review

Hap's review of MARTHA MITHCELL CALLING is out:
"Annette Miller... gives a devilish spin to this gregarious, seemingly clueless, but ultimately pitiable collateral damage of the cover-up of a third-rate burglary that changed the face of American politics."

"
Martha Mitchell Calling ... has contemporary resonances"

Holiday Party

Actors' Playhouse will be holding its annual holiday party for staff on Monday, December 17th, at 5pm.

Food will be provided, and staff is invited to participate in our maniacal holiday gift exchange: everyone who wishes to participate brings a wrapped gift, not to exceed $20 in value. Everyone will pick a number from a hat to select their gift, but the next person has a chance to steal your gift (when that happens, you get to select another gift, or steal someone else's.) Each gift can only be selected three times. It's fun, if twisted.

The theatre will be providing food and drink (soda, wine, or egg nog). And if you have a favorite holiday dessert recipe, you're welcome to bring a plate/tray/bucket/whatever to share.

RSVP to Christy McCouch.

Top of the Week updates, Dec 4

Pending the completion of the sprinkler work, we have passed our fire safety inspection; thanks to everyone who pitched in to make sure we'd be ready for it. The Fire Marshall was very impressed with how much we'd gotten done in the time alloted.

The rental by Permanent Shows went very smoothly; the client was happy with the technical support from our staff. Thanks to all who helped get this one in so smoothly.

The only problem this weekend was, once again, radios not being returned to the booth after every performance. This is the ONLY way we can keep track of all the walkie talkies, and I'm just about at the point of holding drivers' licenses every time you collect one. This applies to Mainstage and TYA shows; radios HAVE to be PUT AWAY in the CONTROL BOOTH. NO EXCEPTIONS.

Madeline's Christmas has a show every day this week.

Reviews are out for Martha Mitchell Calling:
Theater review: Martha Mitchell Calling (Sun-Sentinel)
A big-haired woman with a mouth that roared (Miami Herald)

Martha Mitchell Calling has shows in addition to its regular schedule:
  • Tuesday Dec 4 at 7pm
  • Wednesday Dec 5th at 2:oopm
  • There will be talkbacks after the Tuesday and Friday shows
  • David will handle Tuesday, and Chris will handle Friday.
This Friday night is Gallery Night in the Gables: be prepared for crowded parking garages.

There will be a production meeting on Thursday, at 2:00pm

Production Meeting Notes Nov 15

MMC -
There will be a MMC "stumble" thru for Patrick on Sunday at about 4pm. Patrick and Daniela will then meet afterwards to discuss the lighting design for the show.

Patrick and Chris and Gene will meet on the MMC set after the meeting to discuss placement of the picture frame; it must be far enought US to make room for acting, but far enough DS so lights don't wash out the projection.

MMC Rehearsal will move into the Balcony on Friday morning. Gene has already begun moving Madeline's Christmas out.

The Pouf and Bench need some attention; we should have Ellis look at them.
Gaby will get fabric samples to Ellis so he can find material for the dust ruffle. Same fabric will also be used on headboard and to cover 2 small pillows to help tie in the new elements.

We still need to find a mirror. Gaby will re-paint the bedside tables to bring them more in line with the design concept for this show. Need to get black tule to drape over the mirror.

M's C:
Earl still needs a BS tech. DP has turned us down, and Earl's 1st option isn't available.

GENERAL:
Duet dryer needs service: it's overheating. ML did clear some line from behind the filter, need to check hose and outlet, too.

There is a RENTAL on the Mainstage after the M's C performance on December 1. It plays DS of the 2nd portal: we need to setup the screen for RP. They are bringing sound gear, furniture, projector, and source. They setup at 4:00, dress tech at 6:30, 8:30 curtain.

MMC rehearsal time change

Hi everyone, because of an interview scheduled for Annette, we have decided to change the rehearsal time for the first day of rehearsal. Rehearsals will officially begin on Wednesday, November 14 at 12:30pm.

Thank you, and I’ll see you soon!
-Christy

MMC prop reference photos

Shakespeare & Co built their bed, but since we're using a real bed and frame, we need to find a headboard. We also need the bedside tables; these are pictures of the tables they used:

They found that the tables were very crowded once you dressed them with period phones, small lamps, and a couple other necessary props. WE can either find something similar but with a larger area, or build a shelf onto the back of something the same size (they couldn't hide extensions in their production.)

Here's the drawing of the head board they built, for reference.

Production Meeting 11/01/07

We reviewed some of the trouble spots from the recent fire inspection; a perimeter will be marked around all backstage panels as a reminder not to store stuff in front of them. We discussed alternate storage for the straddle kit: we will remove some of the storage backstage to make room for the kit. Too much surplus material is being stored on the deck.

The City also informed us that we can't have rolloff dumpster in the alley anymore. I will be talking with the City and Waste Management about options, but the worst case scenario is hauling everything back to the shop for disposal.

All the MARTHA MITCHELL calling stuff is in from Shakespeare & Co. The stage floor has been painted black, so we can hang soft goods as soon as the floor plan is finalized (understanding that there will be masking adjustments once the actors are onstage.

Rehearsals for MARTHA MITCHELL CALLING will move onto the stage by the end of the week, ideally Friday the 16th. There will be a stumble through for Patrick on Sunday the 18th. Rehearsal hours will be from 11:30 to 7:30. Ten out of Twelve days will be Saturday the 23rd and Sunday the 25th, and will probably run 11am to 11pm, or perhaps 10am to 10pm.

There are additional performances of MMC outside our normal show schedule:
Wednesday, December 5th, 2:00 pm
Wednesday, December 12th, 10:00 am
Wednesday, December 19th, 2:00 pm

Remember that we will have a talkback after the second Friday performance for every production this season: MMC's falls on December 7th.

Dave is going to talk to Barbara about using the Loge's service bars as dressing rooms for this production, rather than make anyone climb a flight of stairs. Our fallback position is to put Gordon upstairs, and create a dressing area backstage for Annette.

Critical set pieces we don't have:
  • the head board (drawings recieved 11/04)
  • the picture frame ( I think we can use the IRMA VEP frame, but we did recieve plans from Cameron
  • A free-standing mirror
  • 2 bedside tables (elegant)
Finally, a reminder was made that all walkie-talkies and their headsets are to be returned to their cubby in the booth after every show.

Madeline's Christmas: MONKEY

There will be two monkeys in the monkey cage. I chose something familiar.

2007/10/25

Madeline's Christmas: TIGER

This shows the basic theory for the "reverse bobble head" : the pivot point (which I should have labeled but did't) is actually near the bottom of the "pendulum." OR, where the neck would be on a real tiger. The tail swings a lot, but the head just gently rocks back and forth.

Show's up; Congrats!

Thank you to all for a marvelous opening, and a good process to get it there.

The Sun Sentinel and Miami New Times have both given us rave reviews; they are linked on the theater's MySpace page, and they should be on the theater's REVIEWS page by now.

We will have a production meeting on Friday at 2pm; this will give everyone time to grab lunch after the morning matinee. We need to catch up on Martha Mitchell Calling and Madeline's Christmas.

Band Rehearsal

(From Dave Nagy, Musical Director.)
Monday night's rehearsal is 7-10. Same space, upstairs rehearsal hall - I will check if the lobby will be open or not, probably not. If that's the case, the best way to get in would be the backstage door, as they will be working on the set and the door should be open.

Thanks for the great work last Monday!

Just a reminder of what Dave Arisco gave us for a rehearsal schedule for this week (besides Monday):

Thursday October 4: 5-10PM. We will be in the pit for the first time, this will be our sitz-probe with the cast, and also sound will be setting levels.

Friday, October 5: 6-11PM

Saturday, October 6: 10AM till 4 or 5PM

Sunday, October 7: 6-11PM

Monday the 8th we'll be off, then Tuesday will be whoever can make it in the afternoon for a run, and then we'll definitely have the dress rehearsal that evening, 8PM downbeat.

Wednesday the 10th ditto, of course that night is first preview, then we'll be on show schedule. Will see you at Monday night's rehearsal, 7-10. Same space, upstairs rehearsal hall - I will check if the lobby will be open or not, probably not. If that's the case, the best way to get in would be the backstage door, as they will be working on the set and the door should be open.

Production Meeting Notes Sep 25

We reviewed the schedule for FABLE FACTORY:
  • the opening of FABLE FACTORY has been pushed back to Oct 6 2pm: there will be an invited dress on October 5th at 10:30 am that may include a small school group: if more bookings come in it will become the first show.
  • Earl needs a tech to run sound and lights for FF, starting on Tuesday October 2nd.
  • His additional set peices will be installed on the 26th and 27th.
We also reviewed the schedule for URINETOWN:
  • cast might be onstage Sunday evening to begin spacing
  • cast will absolutely be onstage starting Tuesday
  • Kris C. will start on Tuesday, as will Michelle L as Wardrobe Mistress
  • The band will be in on Thursday night (oct 3) to work with Sound

SET:
the bulk of the set is in place, but there are two issues of concern:
  • working out the internal power for the rotating portion of the wagon; this was not finalized in the shop, and it will take some more time to work out how the feed to the internal motor stays out of the way of the rest of the works.
  • there are some logistical problems with using the "amenities" wall as the "ground" in the death scene.
David and I walked the set after the meeting and Dave had the following concerns:
  • all the framing along the floor under the platforming creates a trip hazard. We discussed either removing some of the steel along the floor or decking it over to create an even floor surface under the platforms
  • the rolling ladder needs swivel casters on the front end
  • the lower platform where the ladder plays looks odd with one little step up, and Dave is concerned with actor perceptions of safety: asked to add a deck to that part of the platform up to create a landing instead of a little step.
  • David really wants access further downstage when the wagon is the Amenity. He really wants to look at cutting a small entrance into the brick returns on either side.
  • Include a step ladder in the Amenity so actors' head can pop up over the wall
PROPS and miscellaneous stuff
  • Need a BULLHORN (in stock) (already put in)
  • two rustic benches that match, dance-able (stock)
  • Small FOGGER or aerosol fogger for ghost scene (actor carries the unit out in view, and sprays the ghostly fog around the ghosts to make them ghostly)
  • Costume shop is building the mesh money bags
  • Still need the chair to tie the girl to (she gets carried around) Carl offered to check the thrift shops in Hallandale, Chris continues to search Miami-Dade.
COSTUMES
Moving along. Costume World is ready to ship the rest of the rental package, pending Barbara's approval on final charges.
