Chris visited the shop to review the stuff built so far and to discuss the munchkin land drop with Hector.

  • Need to pull 2-step stair unit for house; door NOT at floor level.

Production Meeting: Dec 13

Earl was not able to make it due to a conflicting change in his schedule
Tony had a task to perform that pre-empted the meeting.

ALTAR BOYZ
  • Platforms are done, steel arches delivered today for assemble.
  • Looked at the LCD screen and PowerPoint for the Soul Sensor display; Dave was initially asking for a larger monitor until he realized that we wanted to use an LCD and not a CRT unit. We are going to slap together a mock-up so he can look at it on Monday.
  • We will be ordering a new set of gel-strings: we have them budgeted under capital costs.
  • Put in check request so Ellis can start shopping costumes.
  • The new mics have shipped from Sweetwater.

Wizard of Oz
  • Gene reports that they've figured out an effective way to accomplish the Collapsing House effect
  • Earl agreed to place Munchkin- land downstage of the ground row to accommodate artwork.
  • The Munchkin Land groundrow is cut.
  • Discussed Scarecrow wagon with Gene; discussed options for "washtub" base for the pole.
  • plan & section given to Patrick; I will email a revised set to reflect the drop relocation.
  • Need drawing of throne unit
  • Need drawing of yellow brick road (accurate to stage)
  • Need color elevations for all - will have for Monday
  • Earl will shop fabric for green curtain.
Martha Mitchell Calling
  • The show continues to get a good reception: the school matinĂ©e was very well received
  • the NEW TIMES review is out, and we agreed it's a good review event though the first paragraph is a little scary.
  • Photo call is set for next Thursday
  • There are several post-show meet & greets on the schedule: Carl warns that Annette needs about 15 minutes to get out of costumes and makeup, and that Gordon may not be able to make it due to family commitments.

Madeline's Christmas
  • Need to order Batteries (will last into Altar Boyz)
FOOTLOOSE
  • Dave will be holding call backs on Monday
  • Sean McClelland was in earlier to meet with Dave about his basic set concept
  • Re: above, Gene will investigate the possibility of putting the 20' turntable on a slipstage: no guarantee that this is on our budget, but he will research it.
  • Dave is setting a follow-up meeting with Sean for this Wednesday; Babs, Ellis, Patrick and Chris will probably sit in.
REMINDER: STAFF PARTY IS THIS MONDAY AT 5PM
if you haven't already done so, please RSVP to Gillian at reception. infoATactorsplayhouseDOTorg. Food and drink, and the Evil Gift Exchange Exchange Exchange.

Oz reference photos: Kansas Countryside

We already have a drop for Kansas; but just in case there is any question of its suitability, I've lined up some pictures of the actual Kansas so I can show that the drop we're using is very, very similar.

Oz reference photos: split rail fence

For the fence bordering the cornfield in both Kansas and Oz, I want an old style split-rail fence that uses crossed posts instead of the upright posts we see in common use now.

My reasons are purely practical: the crossed posts will give a wider footprint and make the fence more stable as a free standing unit.

This is more or less the effect I'm trying to achieve. For our purposes, we only need the top and middle rail.

This one isn't bad: it's a little taller than I want, but it shows how the top and bottom rail relate to the crossed posts.

Jr. Orange Bowl Parade

The parade is on December 29th. The parade route (Alhambra Circle, Ponce De Leon, and Miracle Mile, will be closed to traffic at 5:15. THIS MEANS YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO DRIVE ACROSS THEM.

LeJeune road closes at Miracle Mile at 6:oo pm.

OZ research

This image shows the thematic use of color: munchkins are all blue toned, the lands of trial are red, and of course, the emerald city is green.

Interesting concepts for OZ at this website: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/stumarsh/WIZOZ.htm
this isn't the way we're going, but I thought it was an interesting approach worth admiring.

Production Meeting: Dec 6, 2007

Adminstrative

A reminder that there is a staff Holiday party on December 17 at 5pm: we hope you all will be able to attend.

David will be out of town until Tuesday evening, holding auditions in NYC.

A reminder that Friday is Gallery Night: parking will be in short supply

I will be leading the talkback on Friday evening.

WIZARD OF OZ

Earl and I have met and worked out the show: we'll be able to pull a lot of it from stock. . I am preparing a list of scenic items to pull, and I am already drawing stuff for the shop. Shop will start getting drawings this afternoon.

We will need to get an accurate count of ADC 170 track

We will need to order a muslin drop from Hansen. We should have it down on the paint floor no later than Jan 2.

We discussed constructing a green curtain for Oz; it will be 10' wide by 13' 5" tall. We need to get fabric and webbing to Ellis, and the costume shop will construct.

ALTAR BOYZ

Gene had some renderings of the set.

David asked Patrick to get a quote on rentals for the project: we have a budget of $5000 for this purpose.

I need to call Steve at Stagecraft: he thought he had access to an LED countdown display. Plan B is to set up a computer and LCD display and run a PowerPoint slide show.
UPDATE: Steve says it's a 2 digit display that only counts up or down: no jumping

Madeline's Christmas

Show is fine, but only half the Tivoli on the House Right Aisle is working; one strip is out. Check connections.

When this show comes down, Earl wants to save it again. There is a chance to perform it in Broward next year. We should acquire some large hampers to store the legs and borders. The legs and borders should be clearly labeled. The legs will require proper sewing at some point: we just pinned and taped them for this production.

A window was knocked out of the rear of the main stage; I've called two glass companies to come out and give us an estimate.

MARTHA MITCHELL CALLING

The mirror we didn't use is to be stored in a secure location: Barbara has gotten it donated to our auction.

Kelly Craig gave us a big plug on her show this morning.

Next Wednesday's matinee is in the MORNING. There is some confusion about the starting dates between it and Madeline's Christmas. Earl and I will check it out with Allene.
UPDATE: Martha Mitchell was added later, so it will start at 10:30, not 10 am as indicated on the schedule.

Other Issues

Ellis asked about turning the rolling stairs around for better access to the costume loft. This was supposed to happen during Madeline's load in but didn't what with two shows and the inspection.
UPDATE: Carl has correct the ladder.

Also discussed need to clear out trash from backstage. Simple garbage must be placed in the trash can or a trash bag by the back door; Ociel will not pick up garbage left on the stage deck.

We have provisionally passed our fire safety inspection; we still need to finalize the sprinkler re-certification (backflow valves are all that's left), and we need to clear up the power supply for the servers located in Operations.

Palm Beach Post review

Hap's review of MARTHA MITHCELL CALLING is out:
"Annette Miller... gives a devilish spin to this gregarious, seemingly clueless, but ultimately pitiable collateral damage of the cover-up of a third-rate burglary that changed the face of American politics."

"
Martha Mitchell Calling ... has contemporary resonances"

Holiday Party

Actors' Playhouse will be holding its annual holiday party for staff on Monday, December 17th, at 5pm.

Food will be provided, and staff is invited to participate in our maniacal holiday gift exchange: everyone who wishes to participate brings a wrapped gift, not to exceed $20 in value. Everyone will pick a number from a hat to select their gift, but the next person has a chance to steal your gift (when that happens, you get to select another gift, or steal someone else's.) Each gift can only be selected three times. It's fun, if twisted.

The theatre will be providing food and drink (soda, wine, or egg nog). And if you have a favorite holiday dessert recipe, you're welcome to bring a plate/tray/bucket/whatever to share.

RSVP to Christy McCouch.

Top of the Week updates, Dec 4

Pending the completion of the sprinkler work, we have passed our fire safety inspection; thanks to everyone who pitched in to make sure we'd be ready for it. The Fire Marshall was very impressed with how much we'd gotten done in the time alloted.

The rental by Permanent Shows went very smoothly; the client was happy with the technical support from our staff. Thanks to all who helped get this one in so smoothly.

The only problem this weekend was, once again, radios not being returned to the booth after every performance. This is the ONLY way we can keep track of all the walkie talkies, and I'm just about at the point of holding drivers' licenses every time you collect one. This applies to Mainstage and TYA shows; radios HAVE to be PUT AWAY in the CONTROL BOOTH. NO EXCEPTIONS.

Madeline's Christmas has a show every day this week.

Reviews are out for Martha Mitchell Calling:
Theater review: Martha Mitchell Calling (Sun-Sentinel)
A big-haired woman with a mouth that roared (Miami Herald)

Martha Mitchell Calling has shows in addition to its regular schedule:
  • Tuesday Dec 4 at 7pm
  • Wednesday Dec 5th at 2:oopm
  • There will be talkbacks after the Tuesday and Friday shows
  • David will handle Tuesday, and Chris will handle Friday.
This Friday night is Gallery Night in the Gables: be prepared for crowded parking garages.

There will be a production meeting on Thursday, at 2:00pm
